If you have a severely decayed or infected tooth, you may think that your only option is to have it extracted. However, at Shuang Dentistry, we offer root canal treatment in Yishun, a safe and effective procedure that can save your natural tooth and prevent the need for extraction. Our experienced team uses modern techniques and technology to provide a comfortable and stress-free root canal experience.

The term “root canal” refers to the natural cavity within the center of the tooth. This cavity contains the pulp, which is made up of nerves and blood vessels. When the pulp becomes infected or inflamed due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures, or a crack or chip in the tooth, it can cause severe pain and lead to an abscess.

When is Root Canal Treatment Needed?

Root canal treatment is necessary when the pulp of the tooth becomes infected or inflamed. Some common signs and symptoms that may indicate the need for a root canal include:- Severe toothache pain upon chewing or application of pressure

  • Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures

  • Discoloration (darkening) of the tooth

  • Swelling and tenderness in the nearby gums

  • A persistent or recurring pimple on the gums

In some cases, there may be no symptoms at all. That is why regular dental check-ups are so important.

The Root Canal Procedure: What to Expect

Despite its reputation, a modern root canal procedure is typically no more uncomfortable than getting a filling. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia to ensure that you do not feel any pain.

The root canal procedure involves several steps:

1. Anesthesia and Dental Dam: We will numb the tooth and the surrounding area with local anesthesia. A small protective sheet called a dental dam is placed over the area to isolate the tooth and keep it clean and dry during the procedure.

2. Access Opening: We will create a small opening in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp chamber.

3. Cleaning and Shaping: We will use special instruments to remove the infected or inflamed pulp, and then clean and shape the inside of the root canals.

4. Filling and Sealing: The cleaned and shaped root canals are then filled with a biocompatible material, usually a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. The access opening is then closed with a temporary filling.

5. Restoration: After the root canal treatment is complete, the tooth will need to be restored with a permanent filling or a crown to protect it from fracturing and restore it to its full function. A crown is usually recommended for back teeth, as they are subjected to more chewing forces.
